What is Cupping/ Hijāma Therapy?

Cupping therapy also known as Hijāma -which is a derivation of the word ‘Hajm’, the Arabic term for suction, are an adaptation of an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist places special cups on to your skin to create a suction. It is known that certain health problems can be caused by stagnated blood which causes poor energy flow through out your body. Cups are placed on the skin to create suction, releasing stagnation, pain, and discomfort in muscles and joints. It can also be a useful tool for internal conditions such as headaches, cough, asthma, arthritis, stress, fibromyalgia and infertility. The pressure that the cups create draws blood to the affected area, increasing your blood flow overall, which helps in the process of healing.

Dry Cupping- This is a widely used cupping method (and the most popular) whereby a suction stimulation is applied on the body. Dry cupping enhances blood flow to the cupped area which helps improve the process of healing by blood circulation.

Massage Cupping- This is a specialized technique of cupping that has a deeper effect than traditional hand massage. Massage cupping is ideal for relaxing and loosening muscle tension, improving blood circulation and lymphatic drainage.  This technique allows the practitioner to slide the cups along various restricted areas using organic oils or lotions to increase blood flow and free fascial restrictions. Often times the negative pressure of the cups confuses the body allowing a release much quicker than compressing the tissue with typical massage techniques.

Wet Cupping- This method of cupping, also known as hijāma therapy, blood cupping or blood letting is one of the most practiced and favored amongst those in the Eastern side of the world and early medical practitioners. Wet cupping, involves extracting small amounts of blood and tissue fluids mixed with potentially harmful substances from the body. The treatment process involves the application of cups on various points of the body. A negative pressure (suction) is then created by using a hand pump. This is then followed by applying small, superficial scratches onto the same location point of the body. This is performed by using a small sterile surgical instrument that is disposable. The cups are then re-applied and suction is applied again.
The toxic blood is gradually drawn out and then safely disposed.

Wet cupping is ideal for removing stagnated blood, pain, inflammation, detoxification improving blood circulation, boosting your immune system and overall well being.
Wet Cupping Therapy is a fast and efficient way to release the build-up of toxins from the body and a holistic method of healing from acute and chronic conditions. This type of cupping therapy in modern times has proven to provide positive results for most ailments and it is a powerful and natural alternative that many are now opting for.

Fire Cupping- also known as cupping therapy, is a treatment technique that places glass, bamboo, or plastic jars on the skin to enhance circulation, relieve pain, and extract toxins from the body. You may be familiar with fire cupping, or at the very least have heard of it, if you watched the

2016 Rio Olympic Games.

When to receive postpartum cupping therapy?
For mamas who delivered vaginally, you are able to receive postpartum cupping as soon as you are comfortable after you deliver your baby. Most women receive a postpartum cupping therapy session within the first week or two after delivery. If your baby was born by cesarean section, it is best to wait two to three weeks to receive a regular postpartum cupping session after a cesarean birth. We recommend that you receive postpartum cupping massage every 3 weeks for the first 12 weeks after delivery to aid in postpartum recovery and leave you with a sense of wellbeing.

Postpartum Cupping Therapy Session Positioning
You can lie on your belly again! However, some women still may find it difficult to lay face down on the cupping table due to the increased size of their breasts. In this case, we provide extra support cushioning under your chest to allow mothers to find lying face down to be a comfortable position to receive postnatal cupping. If that’s not comfortable for you, we can also use a side-lying position with pillows, which is also great for those healing from a cesarean birth. Another option is our prego-pillow. Many women find its extra cut out space to comfortably support their breasts and belly in the prone position.

Your Baby and Breastfeeding During a Session
We recommend that you breastfeed or pump right before your cupping session to enhance your comfort and relaxation. We do understand that it can be difficult to leave your newborn at home to treat yourself to rejuvenating postpartum cupping. Therefore, we welcome you to bring your newborn to your cupping appointment at our office. If your newborn is fussy or would like to nurse while you are on the cupping/massage table, we can continue the cupping in a side-lying position, allowing you to nurse or comfort your child. Babies birth to three months of age typically do the best at the office. Once they get a bit older than three months they tend to need more attention and take away from mom's quiet relaxing time.

Abdominal Cupping Massage
(also know as “moving cupping”)

After delivery a woman’s physical body goes through tremendous changes as it strives to achieve its pre-pregnancy state. The uterus shrinks back down, the digestive organs slide back into place, the bladder resumes proper position, and the pelvic floor heals from any strain from pushing. We use moving cupping and fire cupping on this area designed to increase circulation and to aid in the proper realignment of the organs.

After a cesarean birth women should wait at least 6 weeks until the incision is mostly healed before they are wrapped.

Please wear comfortable clothes during your belly binding session. It is ideal to wrap the belly bind over your clothes. We recommend that you wear form fitting clothes without buttons or zippers and a anything that is appropriate for nursing.

Nurturing the Mother…
Belly binding is about more than weight loss, or getting your pre-baby figure back. It is about supporting your body in a time of vulnerability. It’s about honoring the space of motherhood, the transition from woman to mother. Woman are often instinctive nurturers. We often take care of everyone around us, but rarely do we have the opportunity to be taken care of ourselves! Postpartum belly binding is a tradition of care-taking and healing that creates the feeling of being surrounded, supported, and loved.
