A woman’s body goes through many different hormonal cycles in the course of a lifetime. These changes start at puberty with menstruation, then again with pregnancy, and eventually through menopause. A woman’s body is in a constant state of change. Cupping/Hijama Therapy and Herbal Medicine work to restore hormonal and emotional balance, including the overall vitality of women during any stage of their journey.
For menstruation, cupping and herbs can help with symptoms such as: irritability, emotional instability, cramps, breast tenderness, digestive issues, clotting, and headaches. Cupping can help regulate the menstrual flow without the aid of birth control pills by helping to achieve the correct rhythm and flow of the period while working on the endocrine system to restore better hormone function to decrease headaches, cramps, digestive upset, clotted or heavy flow, and breast tenderness.
Not only can hijāma therapy help with regulating the menstrual cycle but it can help with fertility and those trying to conceive. The inability to get pregnant can be due to unforeseen reasons, fibroids, lack of ovulation [anovulation], luteal phase deficiency, endometriosis, PCOS, and low sperm count or motility issues [in men]. For women trying to get pregnant, hijāma and herbal medicine promote conception by boosting blood flow to the pelvic organs, providing them with better nourishment, normalizing FSH levels, balancing estrogen and progesterone levels, increasing follicle size, and improving and strengthening the lining of the uterus; therefore, promoting conception and healthy, full-term pregnancy. Hijāma not only helps the body get ready to be pregnant but helps women relax and de-stress so their bodies are able to become pregnant more easily. A lot of times, stress causes the sympathetic nervous system to be overstimulated causing blood flow to be diverted away from the ovaries and uterus to the adrenals instead which contributes to a potential inability to become pregnant.
Hijāma has helped many women get pregnant with or without the additional use of conventional methods such as IUI or IVF, or in conjunction to improve the rate of success. Many women use Clomid to help promote ovulation during IUI. However, Clomid often causes the uterine lining to become thin, which is detrimental to becoming pregnant. Hijāma can help the uterine lining to thicken and become more uniform. This is a result of increased blood flow to the uterine arteries which then aids in the ability to get pregnant.
During menopause, hijāma and herbal medicine can eliminate hot flashes, night sweats, and sugar cravings while promoting weight loss and better sleep patterns. It can also relieve pain, emotional stress, and stabilize mood swings. Hijāma treatments can also minimize osteoporosis and poor mental function by increasing clarity and focus while also treating anxiety and depression often associated with menopause.
As part of the in-home session, I will arrive ten minutes early to help you fill out a quick medical form so that I can better understand your current health status. In the meantime, I will prepare some organic herbal tea for you (I bring along my own thermos of hot water and organic herbal tea). We will then briefly chat about your stress, diet, and sleep just before getting started.
I recommend that you wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to your arms, legs, and abdomen. Otherwise, you can slip into one of our comfy gowns (which I’ll bring with me), and prepare to get your relaxation mode on!
It typically takes 40 minutes to an hour for a session, which involves placing cups over the skin’s surface and carefully suctioning the spot. Depending on which type of cupping therapy you are having done, (in this case for fertility, menopause, & menstrual pains we always recommend hijāma (aka “wet” cupping), because of its strong positive effect. I would leave the cups suctioned on for about 5 minutes or until the surface of the skin has a reddish/pinkish hue. These colors would indicate that the stagnated blood has moved up to the surface of the skin, which means it would be time to remove the cups and then gently scratch the surface of the skin with a blade to release the stagnation. Clients have often said that this part is not as painful as they had anticipated, in fact, they have described it as being painless!
Once these steps are complete, we wait for the blood to be drawn into the cups. The cups will then be removed, the area will be cleaned, and then re-suctioned back on. This suctioning process would occur up to 3-5 times. During this waiting period, many of my clients choose to close their eyes and relax. Many even catch a few Z’s while the treatment nourishes and encourages the body to heal and naturally regain balance!
